Black ice cream is a real thing. Dark, rich, jet black, onyx and charcoal-like. Can you guess what flavor it is?! Made out of coconut milk and cream, the color is generated from a richly pigmented coconut ash. They burn the shell of a coconut, take the odorless activated charcoal and mix it in. Voila! You get black ice cream! Contrary to the look of it, the strikingly sexy scoop tastes delicious! The best way I can describe it is a light vanilla flavor with a tiny hint of coconut. It’s not ashy tasting or overwhelming coconut, but rather creamy and refreshing. If you didn’t know it was made from coconut, you might not even taste it. It will however, temporarily stain your mouth and hands black but can be washed off right away. Kind of fun, eh?!
Some people believe that the charcoal used has alkaline properties that help remove toxins and clarify one’s body. It can also be used to help alcohol poisoning, prevent hangovers, detoxify, and can alleviate bloating and gas (man, this was made for me)! However, the ice cream that only has about two scoops of charcoal per pint, is really about the color and taste! Please note, this ice cream is NOT deemed a heath food! Sorry to get your hopes up…eating this after drinking a bunch of beers will not actually prevent your hangover. Womp.
This refreshing noir novelty absolutely needs to be tried, or at least photographed for a great Insta pic!
PS. For all those who know I have celiac disease, it was not smart to touch the cone (but so worth it!)…it was swiftly thrown into the trash once I got a few good gluten free licks from the very, very top.
