After many daunting years of walking through blocked off spaces, over wooden planks that lead us down depressed hallways with tarps on either side, the reveal of The Oculus was an immense relief and major breath of fresh air (to say the least). For those who know me well know I love the energy of natural light, the warmth that comes from it and supreme white spaces. It felt right to do a shoot in the space I frequent on a daily basis that was inclusive of such details. Catching the second train after hopping off the Path at Ground Zero will be much brighter and happier thanks to designer, Santiago Calatrava. Ultimately, one will be able to catch 11 different subway lines from the Oculus.
The new 300,000+ square feet of space is now the home of state of the art retail shops and restaurants and is the third largest commuter station in New York City. Designed to bring light down into the subterrestrial space, the open floor plan has two levels of shops but easily ignorable from the structure’s grandiose design and size, fueled with copious amounts of light. There are multiple hinted motifs from the design; an image of a child releasing a bird from their hands or, what I like to believe, an angel above the Ark of the Covenant, amongst a few others.
If you are ever in the New York City area, dropping in to see the astonishing space is highly recommended.
